What You Do Not Know About Merchant Credit Card Processing
Have you ever wondered what goes on when a credit card transaction occurs? When the customer uses a credit card to pay for products or services the information from the credit card is entered into the system by manually entering it or by reading the card through a card imprinter, point-of-sale terminal, or by a virtual terminal. Then the information is confirmed by the merchant service provider so the merchant can be paid. The credit card network works as a gateway between the credit card holder and the financial institution supporting the funds for consenting and backing the transaction. This entire process of data and money exchanged is called the interchange. The steps followed through the interchange are the authorization process, batching, clearing and settlement, and the funding. Authorizing of the card information and if money is available occurs within moments of using the card. Once verified the merchant transmits the information to the financial institution to receive the payment. This normally occurs by the end of the day. The financial institution will then send the information in the batch to the card association so the payment can be taken out. Once the financial institution receives the payment, the merchant will then receive its payment. The merchant will receive the cost of the product or service minus the fee the financial institution charges for processing this transaction. This extensive process occurs every time a credit card is used.
