One method a merchant may chose to go before receiving credit cards from customers is to set up a merchant account with a financial institution. When this is the method, a series of steps take place every time a customer uses a credit card for payment. FDC requires the merchant to provide the merchant identification number (MID) and the terminal identification number (TID) for each credit card transaction processed. After this is submitted, the dollar amount is sent requesting authorization from the cardholder’s bank. A temporary hold is then placed against the customer’s credit card for the amount of the purchase. The number on the credit card indicates the type of card, the bank, and the cardholder’s account. If the amount does not go over the amount of credit the cardholder has then the transaction is authorized and a code is generated. The code is sent back the merchant’s bank. An approval or denial is sent to the merchant, where at this point a receipt is printed. If approved, the cardholder signs the receipt, which obligates payment to the merchant’s bank. At the close of the business day, the merchant transmits all credit card charges to the bank. The merchant’s bank will then deposit the amounts from all sales drafts minus any fees in the merchant’s bank account.
